About Us
The Elizabeth Stavros Memorial Fund was established
for three reasons:
- To honor the generous spirit of our wife,
mother, sister & friend – Liz
Stavros,
- To remember all those who have
lost their battle with cancer, and
- To support those that continue to win the fight.
Liz was first diagnosed with cancer (metastatic lung cancer)
in 1996. In May 2000, she was diagnosed with metastatic colorectal
cancer, and to that she lost her three year and a half year
battle on December 26th, 2003.
During her chemotherapy sessions each week, Liz worried more
about how everyone else was doing than how she was progressing.
She wondered aloud how other patients could afford chemotherapy
and the prescription drugs necessary to alleviate its side
effects, such as her $400 per month anti-nausea medication.
Liz continued to show this concern through to her final days,
when she made her family promise to return her unused prescription
medication and walker so that other patients could use them.
That was the genesis of the Memorial Fund, and it was officially
established in June, 2004 using donations received following
her death.
Initial contributions were distributed quickly, and a need
for additional funding was required. To that end, The Lizzy
Memorial Golf Outing was inaugurated in September 2005 to help
replenish monies and enable us to expand our efforts to help
those in need.
Through VERY generous donations, and profits
from the "Lizzy" Memorial
Golf Outing, Dinner, Auction & Raffle, we were able to
raise $41,000.00 in 4th Quarter 2005. We could not have done
it without the help of ALL of our Golf Outing participants,
sponsors and volunteers. To each of you, we would like to express
our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for keeping our mom's
dream and memory alive.
If you know anyone who could use our help, please do not hesitate
to contact us at jtdbrienen@ameritech.net.
